On Constable Trivia
- The Carry Ons were renowned for holding to the script -
It was the bible, but occasionally the odd adlib was allowed. When
Charles Hawtrey gets out of bed chatting to his budgie, and kicks his
chamber pot, but the object refuses to stay still, and he shouts at it
"Be quiet".
- Norman Hudis, the scriptwriter was sent to Slough police station
for a week to study police procedure. But became to close to the
workings of the place as he told Peter Rogers that he could see no comedy in
the subject. Peter told him to leave the subject for a while and come
back to it later - which he did.
- Originally going to be called Carry On
Copper, but thought Constable was more respectful to the Police.
- Sid James was known for playing crooks, but
this film casts him against type as a policeman
- Kenneth Connor's son plays Little Willie. He
goes on to play other minor rolls in other Carry Ons.
- The main character played by Sid James was
originally destined to Ted Ray who was in the previous film, Teacher, and
although he wanted to play the part, contractually he wasn't allowed.
- Robin Ray, Ted Ray's son played the
Assistant Manager.
- Marianne Stone was originally cast as the
lady who wanted to 'spend a penny' but she became unavailable, but she does
dub over Lucy Griffiths who did play her part.
- The film censors made the producers cut out
a line about 'how to manipulate your truncheon'.
- Leslie Phillips didn't appear in another
Carry On for 32 years, Columbus.
