Synopsis

This comedy contrasts the smuttier Carry Ons with the refinedness of the successful series Upstairs Downstairs and no-one plays for subtlety just for all-out farce as we witness the differences between the landed gentry (Kenneth Connor and Barbara Windsor) and the household staff.

Jack Douglas provides an excellent parody of the Gordon Jackson character with Joan Sims, Carol Hawkins and Vivienne Johnson as the housekeeper/maids. Both this episode and its partner piece ‘And In My Lady’s Chamber’ deal with the introduction of a new footman into the household, the part being played by Bernard Bresslaw in both episodes.

The humour is practically non-existent at times with just the odd moment of innuendo bursting through occasionally, usually with Kenneth and Barbara. There are comic moments based around the ‘new-fangled’ things in the modern home but most of the comedy comes from the outrageous sexual suggestions and the bed-hopping antics of the cast as they are faced with the threat of war and the presence of an obvious German spy.
